Awareness vs Mind

When we talk about the mind or awarene, they may seem like similar concepts. But they have distinct differences that can be best illustrated through a simple analogy.

Imagine a vast multi-story house, with numerous rooms spread across its floors. Each room in this house is initially shrouded in darkness, but you possess the power to illuminate them fully or dimly.

Now, picture that each room has a label, representing various aspects of your life: holidays, work, weddings, anger, attraction, weather, weekend plans, bosses, colleagues, and many more. In fact, there are hundreds of rooms in this metaphorical house.

In this analogy, the ‘mind’ represents the entire house itself. It is a fixed space that contains all the rooms. On the other hand, your ‘awareness’ corresponds to the rooms where you choose to switch on the lights.

It is not easy to realise but the fact is that you have complete control over which rooms to illuminate and where to direct your focus and concentration. The rooms that are lit up represent the areas of your life that hold energy and evoke emotions.

An untrained and restless mind resembles a disco within the house, with lights flickering on and off incessantly throughout the day and night.

In contrast, a calm and composed mind portrays a different scenario. Most of the house remains enveloped in darkness. Only a few rooms are softly lit for a while before fading back into darkness.

Believe it or not, you have the keys to the light switches!

By developing a calm mind, you gain the ability to choose which aspects of your life you want to bring into the spotlight and how long you want to keep them illuminated. This conscious decision-making empowers you to navigate your emotions and thoughts more effectively. Cultivating a calm mind allows you to maintain a sense of peace and control, and a harmonious environment within the house of your mind.
